McCURDY: Dick & Lizzie
Richard McCurdy was born in Ontario in April 1873. He received his education at Chesley, Ontario. He worked at different jobs and was printer of the Chesley Enterprise newspaper for some time.
Richard and his brother, Dan, decided they would give the west a try. Thus on July 8, 1901, Richard made out his application for a homestead on the NW 1/4 2-6-6-W2 at Alameda, N.W.T.
In 1902 he broke thirty-two acres and in 1903 a further thirty-eight and seeded the thirty-two acres which had been broken the previous year. He progressed quite well ; in 1904 he broke another fifty acres and seeded seventy acres. By 1902- 1903 he had acquired two horses and built a house, size twelve by twenty feet, valued at sixty dollars. In 1904 he purchased a third horse and built a sod stable to house the animals, valued at $100.00. On October 21, 1904, at the age of thirty-one years, Richard received the patent on the land he had homesteaded.
He purchased the SE 1/4 10-6-6-W2 and this land became the home quarter. Taxes on this half section of land on October 30, 1909 were found to be $22.00.
The first local post office was at Weir Hill, District of Assiniboia, Northwest Territories.
By the standards of the day, Richard was now well established. In 1907 he married Elizabeth Lawrence, who was born September 19, 1887. Elizabeth's parents had both come to Manitoba from Scotland. Her father arrived in 1882 and her mother probably about the same time. They were married in 1886. Their family included: Elizabeth, Jim, Johm, William, Mary, Ida, Gertie and Bella.
In 1902 Elizabeth's father came west from their home in Inglow, Manitoba to apply for a homestead in the Saskatchewan area. The site they chose is the present home of their grandson, Bruce and Lilli Peckover and their children. In 1904 the rest of the family came from Manitoba. In 1907 the family returned to Manitoba, with the exception of Elizabeth, Jim and John. Elizabeth managed the household duties for her two brothers . That same year, 1907, she married Richard McCurdy and continued her work as well as managing her own home, which was not far from her brother's farm.
Richard and Elizabeth had five children.
Elizabeth remarried in 1920 and she continued farming with her new husband, Robert Shea. Bob, as he was commonly known, came to Saskatchewan from Winnipeg. He was born January 24, 1899 and came from a large family of fourteen children. Elizabeth and Bob had four children.

Richard McCurdy of Lampman, Sask. and his sister from Browning, Sask., arrived home the day before their father's funeral. Richard returned on Monday of this week on account of being busy on his big farm. He keeps two hired men. He also owns a thresher and last fall had 16 men employed. He was very busy during the threshing season but was rewarded by a profit of $2700 from his threshing operations. When he sells out in the West and retires from active work he will come back to Ontario to live.
