McCurdy: Pat & Maggie

Pat and Maggie McCurdy were married in Ontario and to this union three children were born: Rose, Dan and Jean.

Hearing how wonderful the west was, Pat came west. The following year his daughter, Jean, came out and worked in the Lampman Store. In the meantime, Maggie's brother, Adam McCurdy died in Ontario. She took one of this sons, Daniel McCurdy to raise. That fall they also came West leaving Rose, who by that time had married, in Ontario.

Pat and Maggie lived northwest of Browning, two miles west and two miles north on the east side of the road. They farmed there until Pat passed away. Pat's son, Dan, had also come West to help his dad and ended up marring local school teacher Verlie Haw. In 1926, Dan and Verlie moved to Lloydminister, Saskatchewan, where Dan barbered for many years.

Maggie and her nephew, Danny, lived in Arcola for some years. She met and married Archie Campbell and they moved to Harding, Manitoba. Danny finished his schooling in Harding and then returned to Browning. Maggie lived on at Harding and Brandon until her death in 1945.

Jean married Joe Fornwald. They lived at one time near the cut in the hill northeast of Browning. (The train went through this cut and in particularly bad winters the train often became stuck there). They had two children born here. Evelyn and Norman, and of course Danny made his home with them after returning from Harding, Manitoba. Joe and his family moved on to Fillmore and then on to the Huronville district where another daughter, Doreen, was born. Later in 1934 they moved to Kelvington, Saskatchewan. This soon became their home. Joe passed away in 1944 and Jean in 1967.

Evelyn married Milton Elliott, formerly of Kisbey, Saskatchewan. She had four children. Evelyn passed away in 1966.

Norman married Lila Derbyshire and they have one son. Norman farms near Kelvington.

Doreen married Lloyd Lindgren. He passed away in 1976.

Pat's son, Dan, and Verlie Haw had one son. Dan and Verlie retired from Lloydminster to Vancouver to be closer to their son. They celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in 1975. With failing health they moved to a nursing home. In 1979, they both passed away within three months of one another.

Daniel McCurdy, Maggie's nephew, came to Kelvington with Jean and Joe, buying a farm at Archerwell, Saskatchewan, which is near Kelvington. He married Iola Rice. They have three children.

Rose, Pat's daughter, never came West. She had nine children and passed away at the early age of forty-nine.

Deaths

Mrs. Margaret A. Campbell

Sad news reached the community last Friday of the passing of another old timer, in the death of Mrs. Campbell. It was some 30 years since Mrs. Campbell, formerly Mrs. Patrick McCurdy, came west from Ontario and settled north of Lampman. She was 75 years old, and had been a patient in Brandon, Man. General Hospital for the past two years, where she passed away quietly on Wednesday December 6th.

Mrs. Campbell was predeceased by her husband in 1923, and a daughter, Rose Waldriff, in 1931. Surviving her are one son, Dan of Lloydminister, and a daughter, Mrs. Fernwalt of Kelvington, Sask.

Funeral Services were conducted by the Rev. A. Woods, Arcola, Saturday afternoon from St. Michael's Anglican Church, Kisbey, at which a very large number of friends attended to pay their last respects to a friend and neighbor. The remains were laid to rest in Percy Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Messers. Leonard Bauer, James Nelson, Gearld Lloyd, Chas. Smith, R. Shea and Lou Trachsell.

Beautiful floral arrangements paid tribute to her memory, and the sympathy of the entire neighborhood is extended to the bereaved.
