Mitchell: Hugh & Isabella
Hugh Mitchell and Isabella McCurdy likely were married in the Parish Church of Dunluce in Bushmills, Ireland. After about three years Hugh, Isabella and their young son John (age 2) departed from Liverpool, England on a sailing ship named "The Shakespear". There were 269 passengers aboard, plus a large crew. After the Ocean Voyage of several weeks, they arrived in New York City Harbor on May 20, 1841.
Soon after docking, they traveled up the Hudson River, crossing N.Y. State on the Erie Canal. They lived in Schenectady for a time where their second son, Archibald, was born in March, 1842. Here Hugh accepted a job as Foreman on the Erie Canal and was employed there for many months.
As Hugh, and his family, jaunted toward Ontario, Canada he was engaged at the Welland Canal Locks. Their daughter, Margaret, was born at Thorold, Ontario in 1845.
The Hugh Mitchell family proceeded westward into Ontario where they settled in Fullerton Twp.,Perth Co., near Isabella's parent's, Archibald and Margaret McCurdy. Their farm was on virgin soil, a few miles south of the village of Mitchell, Ontario.
At first, the Hugh Mitchell Family was the only resident in the area. This created a problem for their survival due to the abundance of wolves and bears. Their children attended various small schools, and as the years passed, the sons assisted their father in fashioning the home in the forest into a comfortable one story log residence. The family attended Wesleyan Methodist Church in the nearby village of Mitchell.
In 1846-47 Hugh Mitchell leased Lot 37.Con.So.Thames Rd., Fullerton Twp. Hugh gave up earlier property and leased Lot 21, Con.12 in Fullerton Twp, Perth Co., Ontario. Here they lived for thirty years raising three sons and one daughter. Two sons died a week apart, cause unknown.
The agricultural Census for 1861 shows that Hugh cultivated 50 acres of his land, raising wheat, oats, peas and turnips. He kept two milk cows, six steers, two horses and two colts under three years, several sheep and pigs. The remaining 50 acres were pasture, hay and woods. At this time his farm had a cash value of $3000, and was considered one of the best in Perth Co. Needless to say, Hugh had worked very hard.
In about 1875, Hugh and Isabella left their Fullerton Twp. home-farm, probably because their three sons, John, Archibald and Thomas, were then living in the States, and they preferred spending their semi-retirement near their sons.
After leaving Fullerton Twp., Hugh and Isabella spent a few years in Michigan, near their two oldest sons, John and Dr. Archibald. However, John was busy raising a large, young family and Dr. Archibald had contacted consumption and was planning to move to California. In time, Hugh and Isabella moved to Jamestown, Pennsylvania, the hometown of son, Dr. Thomas Mitchell.
