Archibald McCurdy Genealogy and Family History Notes

Low Cairn in 1967, thanks to Don and Marion McCurdy.

The family originated on the Isle of Bute, the west side of Scotland. They were one of the principal families there but on Nov. 30, 1666 the reigning families of Stuarts chased the McCurdys out and they fled to Northern Ireland (or so the story goes.)

The family left the parents and 3 brothers in Scotland. One of the escapees, Pethric is our ancestor. He settled at the Cairn

As time went by part of the family stayed at the Cairn. Other immigrant brothers stayed at the "Cavan" - another townland.

Beulah Stewart's book uses the Cavan as the birth place of her great-grandmother - Isabella (McCurdy) Mitchell. Her information comes from the obituary of Isabella's death notice in USA. Information from this source becomes secondary meaning it is not as good as a birth, death or marriage certificate. The information may not always be reliable.

My own discovery leads to the Cairn as the Northern Ireland birth place and this seems to have proven as accurate as possible.

Archibald b-1790 - farmed in the Cairn in the townland of Lemnagh More, Parish of Ballintoy, Barony of Carey, Ireland - came to Fullerton Twp.

Sailed from Belfast.

All of the McCurdy family came from County Antrim, Northern Ireland. They all lived on a farm called " The Cairn" ( pile of rocks) in Northern Ireland. They originated at "The Cairn" in 1666 - coming from the Isle of Bute, Scotland. The McCurdys were forced to leave Scotland because of religious persecution. Petric McCurdy and the other brothers settled at various places in Northern Ireland. Petric McCurdy is our main ancestor at "The Cairn" He and Margaret Stewart started our long line of McCurdys.

Bushmills, County Antrim, Ireland is a market and post town. It is in the Parish of Bally (Billy), in the Barony of Carey, Province of Ulster. It is near the mouth of the Bush River.

A short distance south of Bushmills is a farm called "The Caven" or "Cavan". Its southern boundary is within eyesight of the Billy Church, where many of the McCurdys are buried. It is the farm where the McCurdys settled after emigration from Scotland, and where the McCurdy family was raised before coming to Canada.

On October 27, 1845 Archibald leased 100 acres at Lot 12, Con. 11 Fullerton Twp. Perth, Ontario, Canada.

On June 15, 1852 Archibald left Fullerton Twp., and went to Hibbert Twp., Perth Co. and leased Lot 23 Con. N. Thames Road.

Archibald also owned land in Usborne Twp., Huron Co. from an early date.

After Archibald's wife, Margaret, died in August 1878, Archibald went to live with his daughter Jane, Mrs John Jamieson, in Fullerton Twp., until he died on November 10, 1878."
