Campbell: Archibald David

Three Campbell brothers Joseph, Archibald and Jack, came west from Paisley, Ontario in 1882.

Archibald D. Campbell homesteaded on S.E. 1/4 22-12-23 and later bought N.W. 1/4 22-13-23 from Duncan Kelly, who had acquired it from Homesteader J. Lamont. For a few years Mr. Campbell returned every winter to Paisley.

In 1898 he married Elizabeth Youngson of Walkerton, Ontario. In 1903 she passed away the three small children Elgin, Wilfred and Ella and the baby Garfield. The three eldest were taken to Ontario to be cared for by their mother's sisters, Jessie and Nellie Youngson, where they attended school. The baby was taken care of by their neighbor, Mrs. Thomas Jasper.

Four years later Mr. Campbell married Jane Swan of Moorefield, Ontario and the following year, 1908, the three children returned home. They attended Rowan School which was situated on the southwest corner of 26-12-23. The three children would cut across the Jasper going to and coming from school. After many nights of coaxing their youngest brother, Garfield, to come home with them, he did, only to be picked up by the school teacher and returned to the Jaspers. It must have been difficult for both families- for Mr. Campbell to have lost his young wife, to have been separated from his children and then to have to go to court to regain his own child- and for the Jaspers who had considered Garfield one of the family.

Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were very active in church work and he was often called upon to make tea at church and social functions. He bought a half section near Rocanville which Wilfred farmed until 1947. In 1925 after his second wife's death, Mr. Campbell bought a house in Harding, later owned by Russell Beal and now vacant. He passed away in 1929 leaving four grown children of the first marriage.
